Essential Test Day Preparation
What to Bring and What to Expect on Exam Day
On exam day, bring your necessary items such as your identification (usually your passport) and a printout of your IELTS confirmation. If you are appearing for paper-based IELTS, bring your own pens, pencils and erasers. However, if you have opted for computer-delivered IELTS, the center will provide the necessary stationery.
You are not allowed electronic devices and personal belongings, hence they will be collected from you by the center and stored in designated areas. You can get your items back after the test.
Arrive at least 30 minutes early, as there are check-in procedures and you may have to go through a security check before you are allowed into the examination room.
Mental Preparation and Stress Management Techniques
How you are feeling on test day tends to make a huge difference on your performance. If you are calm and composed, you will be able to perform better on the test. Therefore, make sure you are well-rested and get a good night’s sleep before test day. Incorporate deep breathing exercises in your routine and visualize your success on the test. This will help reduce anxiety and build a positive mindset. Keep reminding yourself that you’ve prepared thoroughly, and you’re ready to succeed.
Last-Minute Revision Strategies and Rest Guidelines
Balance your time between last-minute revisions and rest. Instead of cramming, go through key points and review summaries of your study materials. Give more time to your weak areas but limit the inflow of information in order to avoid overwhelming yourself. Get ample rest and relaxation to keep your mind sharp and focused on test day.
By combining test day preparations with strategies provided in part 1 of the blog, you will be better equipped to exhibit your proficiency. Following these steps will build your confidence for the IELTS exam and give you a better shot at achieving your target score for UK university applications.
Post-Exam Steps for UK University Applications
Understanding Score Requirements for UK Universities
It is important that you know the specific score requirements of the UK universities you are aiming to apply at. Different universities and programs have different requirements. Typically, high-ranking universities and competitive courses will require a higher IELTS score. Find out what the requirements are for universities and programs you want to apply at. Find out overall score requirement, as well section-wise (Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking) score requirements, if there are any. This information may be available at universities’ websites or you can contact their respective admissions offices.
How to Submit IELTS Scores to Universities
Once you have received your IELTS results, you will have to send your score to the universities you are applying to. Most universities will accept electronic scores sent directly from IELTS testing centers. Your IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) can be sent to up to five universities of your choice for free. However, you have to issue the request within a month of taking the test. Here is how to do it:
- Log in to your IELTS online account.
- Navigate to the ‘Results’ section.
- Select the universities you wish to send your scores to.
- Confirm your selection and submit your request.
This request can also be issued during the registration process before taking the test.
If you want to send your scores to more than 5 institutions, you will have to pay additional fees.
Timeline for Retaking the Test if Needed
If you have failed to achieve your required scores for university admissions, do not panic! You can retake the IELTS test. Check the following steps to plan your timeline:
- Identify Areas of Improvement: Analyze your test performance to identify sections needing improvement.
- Schedule Your Retake: IELTS is available multiple times a month, allowing you flexibility in setting a retake date. Aim to retake the exam at least a month before university application deadlines to ensure scores are available in time.
- Preparation: Use the time between tests to strengthen weak areas. Consider enrolling in preparatory courses or hiring a tutor if necessary.
- Register for the Test: Follow the registration process as before and pay the applicable fees.
With hard work and focused attention on your weak areas, you can significantly boost your IELTS score.
A good IELTS score will open many university doors for you in the UK. Approach the application process with careful planning and diligent preparation to achieve your study goals abroad.
